The Durham Song of the Year is presented to a Songwriter or a team of Songwriters (who are born and or reside in the Durham Region) for a current and or original composition’ of any genre that acknowledges or celebrates part or all of the Durham Region. This award is based on an individual, original song.
The eligibility period of the copyright is April 1, 2021 through to March 31, 2022. Songwriter or Team of Songwriters reside in the Durham Region. For collaborations, the principal songwriter(s) is born or reside in the Durham Region. Songwriter(s) can submit up to three songs for adjudication. Submissions must be original compositions that acknowledge part or all of the Durham Region in lyrical content and theme to qualify. Submission must be a recording (demo or completed).
Between March 15 to May 15, a public callout for submissions will be made. Any submissions that do not meet the eligibility requirements for their respective award category will not be considered.
Public submissions will close on May 15. The Nominating and Voting Committee will go through all submissions to ensure that each submission meets all the requirements for its respective award category.
A panel of selected judges will evaluate the remaining submissions in each category with a given set of judging criteria to determine the top three nominees.
The top three nominees for each category will be posted on the OMA website from July 20 to August 20 for public voting.
Public voting will end on August 20. All votes will be accumulated and the recipient(s) for each award will be announced during the OMA show on September 23.
